Last week, after only 2 days at home I travelled to Austria for the Surf World cup Team Contest. Surf World cup is a huge event taking place in a small town Podersdorf by the lake - Nausiedler See. Every year thousands of spectators come to Podersdorf to watch not only PWA windsurfing world cup and kitesurfing team contest, but also to enjoy crazy concerts and parties at the event site.
The rules for the Kiteboarding Team Contest are pretty simple. Each brand puts up a team composed of 3 riders: One guy for oldschool, one for new school/freestyle, and one girl for oldschool. I have competed as an oldschool rider for BEST Kiteboarding team, along with Mike Schitzhofer as the freestyle rider, and his father Franz, as the oldschool representant. All together there were 12 teams competing for the main pize of 10 000 eur.
For me the competition started with a tiny little surprise, as soon as I found out I was supposed to ride oldschool which i haven’t been told before. Frankly, I never ride oldschool, I haven’t been doing hooked in tricks since a long time, I have never ever tried stuff like board offs , one footers or dead mans before in my life, and most importantly haven’t been riding straps since more than a year now ! When i discovered this fact, i didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, so i went with the first option, and decided to treat the comp like a fun way of trying something new. During my heats i tried doing some oldschool moves like board-offs and one footers, and even sticked some ! At the same time guys were doing a great job winning almost all their heats. I also managed to pass a few of mine, which i totally haven’t expected, so on overall the team did pretty well. Unfortunately only one point separated us from advancing to the finals of single elimination, so team BEST ended up on the 5th place which is not bad. The comp was also my first chance to try out my new wetsuits from Rip Curl ! They did a great job and kept me warm at all times. And they look sick too !
We spent the rest of our time in Austria on hanging out with the crew, chilling in the sun, shredding the cable park in hungary or visiting Vienna. Definitely not a bad start of Summer ;)
